This three day training is being held at Akasha Retreat Center just north of Crozet and northwest of Charlottesville, VA in the foothills of the Shenandoah Mountains. The sweet comfort, mountain views and rustic charm that this retreat center offers is exceptional! On-site accommodations are only $60/night and healthy meals prepared by a professional local chef.

Depression and anxiety has become an epidemic in our society with more people than ever seeking relief through both conventional and alternative methods. Trauma, loss, and the everyday challenges of daily life can create constriction and loss of connection in the physical and emotional body. From these big and small traumas, our body begins to form in a way that sets in fatigue, exhaustion, distress, difficulty focusing, irritability and physical pain.
The physical toll of depression and anxiety reveals itself in the body through tension, pain, misalignment and discomfort. In this course you will learn specific hands-on massage techniques that unwind targeted areas of the body that have been contracted, bringing more flow and movement into the structure. We will look at the science behind depression and anxiety, what is happening in the brain as well as the importance of understanding conventional treatments. We will explore emotional anatomy, including how the body is shaped by our thoughts, feelings and beliefs, and discuss how mindfulness practices can help free us from negative thought patterns. We will incorporate movement and grounding body-centered practices can help support a distressed emotional body system.
You will learn simple body-centered practices to help people feel more alive, connected and embodied through breath, bioenergetics, massage and compassionate presence. Through these embodied practices you will discover the body’s innate ability to recalibrate, reset and restore to its natural flow, beyond depression and anxiety.
This hands-on and highly experiential class is intended for the bodywork practitioner to support clients in the healing of depression and anxiety however, this training is open to everyone interested in empowering massage and bodywork tools to help feel more vital in everyday life.
Can I stay on-site if I don’t want to commute for the training?
We highly recommend taking advantage of this retreat location and staying onsite, particularly if you live more than 30 minutes from Akasha Retreat Center. Shared accommodations (two twin beds) are $60/night,
single accommodations are available for $90/night (sold out) and camping is $30/night. Singles may come available closer to the time of the training – please note in your registration if you’d like to be on the single accommodation wait list. Accommodations are for three nights. Check-in begins as early as 5pm on Thursday and check out Sunday after the training.
Can I room with someone I know?
Yes. When you register please let us know that you are attending with someone and that you would like to share a room with them. If you are coming to the training alone and would like shared accommodations, we will pair you with a same-gender roommate.
Yes. Chef Nate Campbell will be joining us from Baltimore, Maryland to provide healthy, thoughtfully sourced and nourishing meals during the training. You may purchase a full meal package of delicious vegetarian meals including vegan and gluten-free options beginning with breakfast on Friday to lunch on Sunday (8 meals) for $115. If you are staying off-site, you may purchase individual meals – $10 breakfast, $15 lunch, $20 dinner. If you have any allergies or serious dietary restrictions please let us know in advance.
Will there be time in the schedule for rest or hiking?
The training runs from 9:00am-5:00pm each day. Mornings and evenings will be available for personal time. Hiking trails are close by as well as hammocks and chairs overlooking the rolling mountains. For those of you who would like to extend your retreat experience, you may wish to come in a day early.
I’m a massage therapist – can I receive continuing education hours for this training and retreat?
Yes. Bodywork for Depression & Anxiety is NCBMTB Approved and massage therapists will receive 21 CE hours. You will receive a certificate of completion electronically to submit to your state licensing board or for recertification with the NCBTMB.
We’ll need one massage table for every two people attending. You will receive a welcome email after registering with a list of what to bring. This email arrives within 24-48 hours of your registration. If you didn’t receive it, please check your spam box and add the email firstname.lastname@example.org to your contacts.
How do I get to Akasha Retreat Center?
The retreat center is located about 30 minutes northwest of Charlottesville, VA in Crozet at 6656 Mountain Light Place. . The retreat center does not recommend using a GPS, as service can drop off close to the center but instead printing directions. For directions, click here to access Akasha’s website.
